This year members of Walsden St Peter’s Church held a bonfire for the 16th time, with hundreds enjoying the spectacle.

It was the first event in a social programme which will keep church members and visitors busy into the pre-Christmas period.

Mrs Irene Bateman of the church said that Mr Jamie Nield again financed the firework display, with the added sponsorship of Maxwell Fun House.

“The food was donated by Grandma Pollard’s fish and chip shop, Walsden Newsagent and members of the church.

“St Peter’s Church would like to thank all who contributed and helped in any way,” she said.

The clergy from St Peter’s, St Mary’s, Todmorden, and St Michael’s, Cornholme, helped with collection buckets and mingled with the visitors, some of whom had come from as far as Leeds.

“The Rev John Flood said that it was the first time he had been to the bonfire and spoke about how wonderful it was, with such a splendid firework display and really good food and drink. It was wonderful to see the community enjoying themselves and coming into our church,” said Mrs Bateman.

Following this, on November 15 for the second year the church held a social event at Walsden Cricket club where they were entertained by the singer Mike Alone. Refreshments were served and people enjoyed listening to Mike and joining in the dancing.

“A great time was held by one and all. Special thanks must go to Mrs B, Howley for all her hard work,” said Mrs Bateman.

The last social event this year will be in church on Friday, December 5 (7.30pm) when Todmorden Brass Band will lead a Spirit of Christmas event with songs and carols, open to all. Refreshments of cheese and wine will be served.

On the third Sunday of each month there is a family service at St Peter’s (10.30am), followed by refreshments.
