Walsden Cricket and Bowling Club continue their series of sportmen’s evenings with an appearance by former Everton, Manchester City and England football striker Joe Royle later this month.

Royle, who also managed Everton, where the club won an FA Cup in 1995, City and took Oldham Athletic into the First Division and the first two Premier League seasons, appears there on Friday, January 30, at 7pm.

Tickets are priced at £10, including some supper, and the event follows on from the first in the series, featuring former Premier League football referee Mark Halsey, who spoke about his career in football, personal challenges and the writing of his autobiography.

Club chairman Jon Green said the first event, held in November, had been very successful and the Scott Street club were very pleased to secure another high profile sports figure in Royle, in conjunction with Sky TV sports commentator Peter Smith.

It increased the number of social events being held at the club, he said.

Tickets are available from the club, committee members or on the door on the night.

In his day Joe Royle was one of the country’s most famous footballers, making his Everton debut when he was just 16 and was the club’s leading scorer for five seasons, winning a League Championship medal in 1969-70.

He signed for City in 1974 and when his playing days ended he began a successful managerial career, including the 12-year stint at Oldham which saw him take the Lancashire club into those three top flight campaigns, their first for 70 years.
