The Upper Valley tradition of an open-air new year swim made a wonderful wintry spectacle at Lee Dam, Lumbutts, Todmorden.

Despite the chilly conditions, swimmers young and old took to the water for the traditional dip at Lee Dam before retiring for hot soup and rolls at nearby Top Brink Inn.

Debbie Lorimer, from the organisers Todmorden Swimming Club, who run the event with the help of Todmorden Lions Club, said: “It went well.

“The temperature of the water was four degrees celsuis.

“There were 30 people who took part, which was slightly down on last year, but a lot of them said they would do it again next year.

“There was a good atmosphere and a mixture of young and old.”

“I didn’t take part this year. I keep saying I will so watch this space!”

The winner of the men’s category was Craig Ellis, while Karen Purdy won the women’s category.

Harry Brown won the boys category while Lauren Kirkup won the girls category.
