A group of people have formed a new Upper Valley Justice and Peace Group/CND group in Hebden Bridge.

The new group hopes to drive peace and justice issues up the political agenda in the run up to the General Election in May.

The inaugural meeting of the group will be held at the Hope Baptist Church on March 11 at 7pm, with guest speakers including Professor Dave Webb, chair of National CND, and Mayor of Hebden Royd Jonathan Timbers.

Kathy Pitt, of Hebden Bridge who is one of the organisers of the meeting, said: “I think it’s outrageous that the Government are planning to spend £100 billion on a pointless and immoral weapons system like Trident, while people in this country are relying on foodbanks, and our NHS is being dismantled. It’s obvious to us that we need to cut Trident, not our public services, but we only have the next year or so to persuade MPs about that.

“It felt like the right time to start the group and put some energy in between now and 2016. If we don’t act now, we’re basically saddling our children and their children with the financial and ethical burden of nuclear weapons.”

The official name of the justice and peace group will be decided at the meeting.

Anyone is welcome to attend.
