Work on the first phase of new a flood resilience scheme has began in the Calder Valley.
The scheme, which started on Monday in Todmorden, is expected to improve more than 450 properties in the Upper Calder Valley.
The Environment Agency is working alongside Calderdale Council, Yorkshire Water and the Canal and River Trust to deliver the series of projects that aims to reduce the risk of flooding from surface water and river flooding.
At Shop Lock, Todmorden, the work to prevent water from the Rochdale Canal from flooding the car park and surrounding properties at Lever Street has begun.
Elsewhere, the project in the Nutclough area of Hebden Bridge has started and aims to reinforce flooding measures by constructing a new screen and overflow in the lower reservoir, as well as collector drains in Nutclough Road and Keighley Road.
James Walton, project manager at the EA, said: “We are committed to developing solutions that will provide an improved protection to as many properties as possible.”
