A dance with a message

If you wandered into the centre of Hebden Bridge last Sunday, you may have seen a women and girls flash mob dancing in George Square.

Well, here’s why it was taking place - and proving a memorable spectacle.

The dance was on International Women’s Day and was part of One Billion Women Rising, which is a global movement to end violence against women and girls.

One in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime - that adds up to one billion women, said a spokeswoman for the organisers.

She said: “More than 100 girls and women showed up to dance.”

She explained that the girls and women had been practising for the past three weeks with the help of Gil Burns, a community dance artist.

And while it was a serious message they wanted to put across, it also looked like a lot of fun and enjoyed by the spectators who stopped to watch it happen.
