Children at several upper Calder Valley schools are making banners urging motorists to watch their speed as part of global road safety week.

Representatives from seven schools and academies attended the interschool council meeting at Calder High School last week to discuss road safety issues.

Teacher Jan Healey, from Calder High, said: “The main item on the agenda was to follow up work on road safety.

“Rob Stainer, from Calderdale Road Safety, attended and showed the students an example of the size of banner they would like to produce.

“Students are going back to their schools to design these for the next meeting.

“These will then be displayed at each school but will then be swapped with one from another school to try to keep the reason for the banner in people’s minds as they drive past the schools.”

All the schools involved are completing a survey regarding where students have to travel to and from in a morning and afternoon, and producing a giant map with the school at the centre.

Rob Stainer, Calderdale road safety co-ordinator, said: “Calderdale Road Safety is now working with the interschool council in helping them to develop different banners to hang on their gates.

“These banners will ask parents not to park inconsiderately outside their schools.

“We have also given each school a map showing a mile radius of their school and ask them to look at where the pupils come from and how they can develop safer routes.”

The interschool council is also campaigning for 20mph zones around all schools in the upper Calder Valley.

As part of this, schools requested the road safety team to bring its speed indicator device (SID) to monitor the situation on Midgley Road, Mytholmroyd - one of the problem areas identified.

Results show the average speed when the SID was present was 28mph, with a maximum of 36mph. The speed limit on that road is 30mph.

The interschool council will meet again in the coming weeks to discuss the matter further.
