Music and crafts as community came together

A SUMMER craft fair became a community event with parishoners being joined by local schoolchildren and a range of stallholders.

Having had their own summer fair that morning, children from St Peter’s School made the short journey to St Peter’s Church, Walsden, to lend their support and their voices to the church summer event.

With craft stalls hosted by people living in the village and from Todmorden adding to the attractions, the aim was to raise money for church funds, boosted by a tombola and raffles.

Food was also available in the cafe area through the afternoon, of which a highlight was a music segment which included a performance by the school choir.

The stalls provided a lot of interest including wares such as hand-crafted cards, paintings, jewellery, pottery and more.

Church member Irene Bateman said people calling in had a good time and the event showed different parts of the community working well together.

“It was an enjoyable day, particularly with the children coming up from the school to sing for us, accompanied by parents and grandparents there to support them,” she said.

It was another event that strengthened the links between the church and the school - during term-time the church is used on Monday afternoons by the mothers, grandmothers and toddlers group, from 1.30 pm until 3pm. The new term begins in September.

Other events through the autumn include a coffee morning, a stall at Todmorden Market and a concert of brass band music.
