A Todmorden man who lied to magistrates about his income during a fines hearing has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Richard Holmes, 52, of Shakespeare Avenue, pleaded guilty to a perjury charge when he appeared before a judge at Bradford Crown Court.
The court heard that Holmes, who suffers from health problems, told the magistrates he was not yet receiving disability allowance during a hearing at Calderdale Magistrates Court on April 5.
Holmes’ barrister Louise Azmi said he was on a very low income and lied about it because he wanted to get more time to pay fines totalling £300.
She said the former welder was in very poor health and would not be able to do any unpaid work for the community.
Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC sentenced Holmes to three months in prison.
But he suspended the term for nine months.
Holmes will also have to pay £50 costs and a victim surcharge of £80.
