Confidence an issue as Borough bid to turn tide

Todmorden Borough host Whinney Hill on Saturday (3.0) desperate for a change of luck to help them get out of a rut.

Borough are on a five-match losing run after a 2-0 home setback against Croston Sports five days ago.

That is frustrating for boss John Gilford as plenty of the line-up which went unbeaten up to Christmas in the West Lancashire League last year are still involved.

Borough are not playing badly but they are struggling to put the ball in the net and confidence has suffered as a result.

Whinney Hill, from Accrington, are third at this early stage of the season but Borough, who have one win and two draws from eight games, beat them twice last season so should go into the contest with no fear.

However, manager’s son Elliott Gilford is out for between six and eight weeks with a torn calf muscle.

Against Croston, Borough were poor in the first half and fell behind to a 28th minute own goal. A long diagonal ball to the left flank was followed by a cross and Harry Whitehead, who had to try to deal with the ball as attackers queued up behind him, only managed to put through his own net.

The home side were better after the break but Croston got a decisive second goal midway through the second half from a well-worked move.

Skipper Daniel Skwarek was possibly best for Borough, who were left to reflect on a Dean Farry effort which was blocked on the line and an Oliver Wood header which missed the target.
