This year is a very special year because it is the anniversary for WWI.

Year 9 have been learning about the war, why it started, propaganda, the defences and tactics that were used by all countries involved.

It has been really interesting and one of my favourite parts has been to write a letter home from the trenches putting myself in the shoes of a soldier on the front line.

At Todmorden High School, Ewood Lane, we have a victory garden which was put in by some students a few years ago ( and the garden also has an Anderson Shelter.)

To commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the war, we decided to plant poppy seeds in the garden.

These were chosen because poppy’s were the first plant to grow on no man’s land and poppy’s are the flower that represent remembrance for all those who have lost their lives in battle.

Once the seeds had been planted we all stood and listened to two of the students read the poem In Flanders’ Fields which was written by a soldier, Lt Colonel John McCrae who later lost his life in the war.

We then stood to observe a minute’s silence to remember all those who lost their lives in battle.
